The Roehampton Master of Arts in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy programme is an intensive dual specialisation programme that is based on a rich understanding of the complexities of human behaviour. The programme is delivered by academics and practitioners who are leading experts in their field and taught by means of interactive lectures and seminars, experiential skills workshops, small clinical supervision groups, and personal development work. Much of your learning will be by a process of reflection on the experience of skills practiced and the use of demonstration, observation, self, peer, and tutor feedback as well as more traditional academic study.

This is a 100% coursework-based programme.

Admission Criteria

Participants are expected to contribute to the class learning experiences in a cohort and peer learning environment. You will be assessed based on experience, aptitude, potential, and skills.

An undergraduate degree at grade 2.2 or above in psychology or the social sciences or an arts related subject

A completed basic counselling skills training

Evidence of experience of working in a helping role with vulnerable adults (either employed or voluntary work)

&

Minimum of 6.5 IELTS overall with no less than 5.5 in any band, or equivalent (applicable only for graduates from non-English programmes)

Delivery Structure

The Masters in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy programme is taught by means of interactive lectures and seminars, experiential skills workshops, small clinical supervision groups, and personal development work. Introduction to Counselling Practice

An introduction to counselling skills and initial preparation for counselling practice.

Integrative Theory and Practice

This module will further develop students’ capacities to think and work integratively, with a particular focus on symbolic and unconscious communications.

Foundations of Professional Practice

Provides students with further opportunities to practice their counselling skills. 

Personal Development 1

Personal development is viewed as a crucial element of the programme. Learning to know and understand oneself is an essential prerequisite to understanding and being able to help others. 

Integrative Theory and Skills

Presents and critically evaluates the person-centered model as a well-established example of theory and practice which is phenomenologically based, contains a generally agreed set of generically applicable therapeutic skills, and emphasises the central importance of the therapeutic relationship. 

Supervised Counselling Practice 1

As competence can only develop through practice, students are required to work with clients to gain practical experience. In order to complete this module, students must complete a minimum of 80 hours.

Assessment of Clients for Counselling and Psychotherapy

Assessment, diagnosis, and knowledge of clinical disorders are 3 strands that are deeply interrelated.

Personal Development 2

Learning to know and understand oneself is an essential prerequisite to understanding and being able to help others. 

Advanced Integrative Theory and Practice

Aims to enable learners to develop and apply an integrative, relational model of therapeutic practice at a professional level and to understand the reasons for working in this manner. 

Supervised Counselling Practice 2

In this module, the focus is on the development of advanced integrative practice.

The Role of Research in Counselling

Provides a critical approach to expert knowledge that informs counselling and psychotherapeutic approaches, particularly addressing contributions from research.
