Roehampton wins Institution of the Year at AimHigher London Practitioner Awards

The University of Roehampton won Institution of the Year 2019 at the AimHigher London Practitioner Awards at Senate House on 11 July.

AimHigher is a collaborative partnership that aims to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds to access higher education. Roehampton has supported AimHigher for a number of years and significantly increased our work with the organisation in 2018/19, supporting 37 events in total, including 10 on campus. The Schools and Colleges Engagement Team were helped by a range of colleagues across the University in delivering these events, including staff from Law at our Debate Higher event, Dance and Drama at our Performing Arts Day and Growhampton at our Year 9 NCOP day.

Andy Kesson, Department of English and Creative Writing, also received a nomination for the ‘Inspiration Award’ for his dedication to engaging students with academic studies, and Sabiha Naz Aziz received a nomination for Student Ambassador of the Year.

Catherine Fenwick, Co-Director of AimHigher London, said: “AimHigher London is delighted to have recognised the University of Roehampton as Institution of the Year 2019.

“Roehampton has hosted, participated in and collaborated across the breadth of AimHigher projects this year, including the National Collaborative Outreach Programme.” They have collaborated with other partners, led in the development of new activities, and involved WP staff, academics, and senior management across the breadth of programmes, including the Debate Higher Oracy programme for KS3 learners and the London Teachers and Advisers’ Conference.

“In addition, they play a key part in steering the organisation strategically. Across the partnership of 10 Higher Education Institutions University of Roehampton have consistently been the ‘go to’ institution throughout this academic year.”

The AimHigher Awards recognise ‘the extra mile’ practitioners go in delivering collaborative outreach activities to over 1600 young people every year.
