The graduate diploma in Chinese Management Studies is aimed at executives who want an in-depth understanding of a Chinese mind required for managing and dealing with Chinese. China is one of the oldest civilizations and is the oldest continuous civilization in the world. China has constantly been a major power and influence in East Asia and its ability to stand alone lies on the Chinese wisdom in management. Collected and time-tested over a few thousands of years, the wisdom of Chinese Management is definitely a prizeless know-how, especially with the re-emergence of China as a powerhouse.
The aim of the course is to provide an academic qualification of sufficient depth to equip students with the knowledge in management from Chinese wisdom and the skill to manage businesses in China. This program is suitable for candidates from a wide diversity of professional fields and backgrounds who require greater competency in their management skills beyond Western approach and also have a better understanding in managing Chinese business relationship or business units in China.

Managing CHinese
The first module Managing Chinese is focused on the styles of leadership that are appropriate of managing Chinese inside of China. Leadership is crucial for the success of an enterprise and in this module, the focus in on Chinese leadership and their styles. Together with leadership, it is the exploration of the different approaches to the art of organizing businesses among the Chinese. Unlike Porter's niche strategy, Chinese tend towards sustaining a portfolio of different economic activities. In China unlike in the West, guan-xi or relationship is of paramount importance. Thus in this module, the emphasis is on in-depth understanding the role of guan-xi in Chinese businesses. In particular, on how guan-xi ought to be managed in China. There is however not a single text but a range of books and articles that can cover these key topics under Managing Chinese. Very importantly, the lecturer should have as essential, the background experience of China.
Chinese philosophy
In this module, the focus is on gaining deep understanding in the philosophy of the Chinese. For China has such a long, continuing history of 5,000 years and to truly appreciate Chinese management, one should understand her philosophy. The core of the teachings of Daoism is in Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching. Along with this is the even much older roots to Daoist philosophy, that of the I Ching. Despite its antiquity, its philosophy embedded in the hexagrams remains equally if not even more applicable today as in the past. In China, there are often citations during discussion in boardrooms of lines or passages from especially the Zhou Yi. An understanding of the root texts will better equip the participants in understanding the minds of the Chinese. Besides these two key texts of Tao Te Ching and Zhou Yi which are uniquely and deeply rooted in the philosophy of Chinese, there are other schools of philosophy such as Confucianism and even Maoism which should be reviewed.

With the opening of China to the world, the Chinese had become as a result more internationalized in their outlook. However there are still deep cultural differences in approaches and thinking between Chinese and Americans, Europeans, Japanese, Koreans and Indians and others.
The purpose of this module is to explore what are these differences and how these may impact on management as well as organization. As teaching materials for this module the lecturer should draw on the latest and comprehensive empirical studies as reported in international journals.
China is fast changing and transforming, so participants ought to be given the updated perspective of these differences.

Why study a historical novel? In the view of Dr FOO Check Teck, if Art of War by Sun Tzu is the book of principles on strategy, then the Romance of the Three Kingdoms (三国演义) is the equivalent to a collection of Harvard Business case studies. In the novel are stringed together, many cases illustrating the working of strategy. Although a novel it spans over a century, a long period of Chinese history for a single work. Anyone who studies intensively this novel will be able to grasp the mind of the Chinese. Even in today's Chinese boardroom, you will hear of names of characters from the Romance of Three Kingdoms being mentioned.
